POST SABBATICAL..................

It is again after nearly 4 months that one is getting back writing on the blog. This self imposed sabbatical was not because there was not much happening on the Alumni front, but was because the inputs were not being sent for uploading and I did not want to "lift" pics from Facebook/Orkut etc. However, these social network sites are being used very actively to pursue the aim of reconnecting with batchmates and friends. The feeling of belongingness is quite visible for everyone to see.
This school blog meanwhile found mention in some vernacular dailies some time back for being the only blog of a Govt School in Chandigarh. One doesn't know how correct it is, but anyway we need to make this blog more vibrant and interactive. How exactly, is for you all to tell and guide. Can we begin by having another look at our respective batch lists and updating it? We did get a lot of information after the Get together in April but haven't been able to upload it. Shall be doing that part soon.
And now the most awaited question......... Should we have another School Get Together? If yes, then 'When'?  How will end October or mid Nov be? Hopefully a lot of you will be home for Festivals. Please let us know your views. The more unanimous they are, easier it will be for us to home on to a most suitable date. And I must admit, we will need as many volunteers as possible to help us organise the show. Last time around some generous Alumni came around to help us prepare memorabilias etc. Such help(only genuine) will also be required this time. Let's put our thoughts together on this issue. Hope to hear from you all soon.............

OBITUARY: GURMEET SINGH (1984 BATCH)

It is with a deep sense of sorrow that I share the news of untimely demise of our friend Gurmeet Singh of 1984 Batch ('A' Section) on 27 Aug 2010  at Fortis Hospital, Mohali after suffering from Swine Flu for about a week. The news comes as a shock to all his friends and we pray to the God Almighty to provide strength to his family to bear this irreparable loss. May his soul rest in peace.
I remember Gurmeet as a very affectionate and friendly class fellow with whom we had spent our golden years in school studying and playing together. Ever accommodating and ready to help others, Gurmeet will always remain in our thoughts and we will cherish the times we spent together. Gurmeet, we will miss you.

AFTER 03 APRIL'10..............WHAT NEXT?????

It has been a month since we all got together to celebrate our common bond, "35 MODEL CHANDIGARH". We all were able to interact and reconnect with old buddies, reminisce our school days with our class fellows & teachers. The blessings bestowed by our teachers while passing out has brought us where we are today and I am sanguine that the blessings they gave on 03 Apr '10 shall take us further from here to our chosen destinations in life. The last one month has been spent, at least by us, basking in the warmth of a job well accomplished and the compliments received. And I must admit, they were the best rewards one could get. So, it is a big "THANK YOU" from Rajiv's side as well as from my side. We may not have been able to thank each one of you individually for your compliments but we cherish them, all the same.
Organising the school alumni meet was a roller coaster ride for us. It had it's ups and downs. There were many issues that frustrated us but there were more peaks than troughs and so one did derive a sense of satisfaction out of the whole experience. One has learnt what to do and what not to do; whom to approach and whom to avoid.  Now is the time to move on. My pre-occupations have not allowed me to get down to compiling the data base that we have collected for making the directory. Hope this pending task gets completed soon !!!!!!!!!!!
In the last one month one has received a lot of fresh inputs and querries from our Alumni who hither to fore did not form part of our data base. It is our earnest request to all our friends to further consolidate the details of their batch so that whenever we get together next, there are new friends joining in and re-connecting. The inputs can be sent through the comments section of the blog or through the email.
This blog belongs to all the Alumni of 35 Model Chandigarh. Therefore I am extending an invitation to all of you who would care to express their views, to send the same at the administrator's e-mail and we shall put it up on the blog. Gurmeen Ma'am has made fantastic contributions and this should serve as a motivation to rest of us to write whatever we feel about the school or our experiences. We all must start thinking about How, When and Where we all should be getting together next. So, let's start weaving another dream and soon we shall together see it materialising.

35 MODEL ALUMNI MEET 03-04 APR 2010 - I

It has been a week since we all got together and cherished memories of the days gone bye in our school life. The event was well attended by the Alumni as well as the Teachers. In fact the spirit shown by our teachers some of then too old to even walk without support has taught the rest of us a lesson or two. The "JOSH" shown by our senior batches which turned up in huge strength is also commendable. Alumni from 1974 batch onwards up to 1991 batch attended the get together. To me personally the memories of the evening are quite vague, as one was constantly on the move. The evening was quite exhausting but satisfying especially after seeing the expressions on the faces of all those present there. The feeling is inexplicable. It is for this reason that I was shying from putting up a piece on the get together on the blog. Words just can not explain the sense of accomplishment & elation one feels for all the affection we received during the course of evening. We express our gratitude to all those who turned up to make the get together a success and to all those who gave us their unstinted support throughout the planning and organising of this re-union, whether in terms of sponsoring souvenirs or with their creative thoughts and ideas. "THANKS".
In the next few posts I will upload some of the snaps of the get together. We are planning to make copies of the pics clicked on CDs and send them to all attendees. This will take some time and you will have to bear with us.

In the next post we will upload some pics of the revered teachers who attended the alumni meet.

RE-UNION TO RE-DISCOVER !!!!

RE-UNION TO RE-DISCOVER !!!!
Gurmeen Sethi (1978 Batch)

The night of the re-union finally arrived and we all got together at the lake club lawns after meticulously following the route posted by Atul on the blog. Signing in at the entrance nobody imagined the encounters that followed like........'oh my god ,it's you'......'tere baal sare safed kaise ho gaye?.....'tere baal kahan gaye?'.....tu moti.. ho gayee hai'.....'Yaar you're still the same'......'oh! how nice to see you'.......' oye tujhe kya ho gaya hai?''....' I would'nt have recognised you had I seen you else where'..............!!!!!!!!!!!

The initial intros’ were followed by complimentaries like hand shakes , hugs..pats on the back.. and punches in the stomach etc.It was like the clock turned back and we were all back to being sixteen years old. Everyone was soooooo….. excited and even the most introvert group member could be seen yapping away to glory. The immature disagreements and differences of the school-days were forgotten and now we all met as responsible adults mature enough to laugh at the silly pranks we enjoyed doing in those days.We had sooo much TO ASK....TO TELL.... AND TO RECALL!!It was truly a day of sorts.

Meeting our old teachers and principals' was the yummy chocolate sauce on the ice-cream.....and especially being remembered by them so vividly was a dream come true!!!

Snacks were in plenty and the tables were laden with exotic dishes,...but when the MIND IS SATIATED...IS THERE ROOM TO SATISFY THE STOMACH???

That evening, I, who by worldly standards is MRS H. J SINGH...discovered the maiden 'GURMEEN SETHI' ...I had been in the yesteryears. All these years I had been so busy happily playing the role of a WIFE...MOTHER...DAUGHTER...DAUGHTER-IN-LAW.......that I lost the 'ME' somewhere. But that evening I had done something for myself and re-discovered myself right in the middle of my old friends.

The next day at school took me on a nostalgic trip watching the cricket match.....sitting on the bench of class-IX and remembering the gud old days. Our teachers were such great fun. A round of the school revealed that though a lot had changed towards developing the infra structure along with our own self, yet deep down we still retained the bubbling freshness and innocence of the yesteryears.I shall cherish these memories for years to come.

The credit for this gala event goes majorly to Atul Pandey and Rajiv Tiwari who selflessly gave their ALL-their TIME, EFFORT , BRAINS and a lot ' MORE' to make this re-union a huge success. Also this event would'nt have been possible had it not got the unstinted support and attendance of all the seniors...juniors...and contemporaries.I am grateful to my husband who being away on an official tour ...not only motivated me but also arranged for me to reach chandigarh and be a part of this GR8 event.

Hope this tradition is continued for all times to come as;

'COMING TOGETHER IS A BEGINNING,
WORKING TOGETHER IS PROGRESS,
KEEPING TOGETHER IS SUCCESS.'

MR SP KAKKAR

MR SP KAKKAR

Today, while visiting a Medical Diagonostic Lab in Sec 22, Chandigarh, I happened to notice an old patient being brought in on a wheel chair. Since there was nothing unusual about it, I continued with my work till I heard one of the employees ask the elderly patient if he would like a glass of water while his turn comes. The patient replied, "Thank you, I do not want anything but I want you to finish my tests so that I am relieved of the pain". I turned around to have a closer look because I had heard this firm, confident and reverberating voice before. Sure enough it was our Kakkar Sir. He appeared a bit feeble due to age but had not lost his spark. If I say that I was elated to meet him; it would be an understatement. I have remembered him so very often while working on the blog and while reminiscing the school days. I met him and he was visibly happy to know that I was his student. He had suffered a "fracture of spine" and thus was in great pain. I chose not to indulge him in conversation lest it aggravates his pain. I payed my regards to him and withdrew from there wishing him quick recovery, but not without noting down his contact details. I am sure there would be many like me who would wish to convey their regards and best wishes to him for his speedy recovery. His contact details are:

ALUMNI DATABASE

About 10 days back we had visited the school and interacted with Ms Indu Bala Dahiya, our school's present Principal. When shown and told about the school blog, she had complimented the effort and assured all possible help. She also commented that this is probably the only Govt school blog, at least in Chandigarh. The help came yesterday when we received a mail listing out names of school alumni right from the 1973 Batch up to 1999 Batch; a full 26 years data base, something that would have been an impossible task on our own. I take this opportunity on behalf of all the members of 35 Model fraternity to thank Ms Indu Bala Dahiya and her team to have extracted the data from old registers so painstakingly in so little time. "Thank You Ma'am". In due course of time the names of the batches will be put up on the blog for you all to update them with the contact details of your friends. I am sanguine that this will help us in a big way to locate our friends and class fellows reminisce old times and share a laugh.

1984 BATCH GET TOGETHER - 21 FEB 2010

The 1984 batch finally took out time from their supposedly busy schedules to get together on 21 Feb 2010 at the Press Club Chandigarh, a venue kind courtesy Kuldeep Singh. The get together initially planned for 20 Feb evening could only materialise on 21 Feb afternoon and due to this last minute change some of the batch mates could not make it but sent their best wishes and hello. Some were not keen from the begining and decided not to attend but then the lucky 13 who met ensured that it became an afternoon to cherish. The afternoon was filled with laughter and reliving old times. We all were behaving exactly the way we used to 26 years back. The same back slapping, leg pulling and remembering of teachers, incidents and even heartthrobs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The afternoon had all that was needed to make it memorable. Some of us were meeting after March 1984; a period of about 26 years. The afternoon ended much later in the evening with the promise of meeting more regularly, ensuring attendance of those who did not attend this time and making it family affair.

SCHOOL GET TOGETHER

It's going to be a year since the school blog was started with the aim of reconnecting the school alumni and to fulfill the desire of meeting those we grew up with. In these few months this initiative has hopefully been able to deliver this wish, may be only in part. People have reconnected, shared reminisces from the past, and have even met; albeit in smaller groups. One gets to hear news of our alumni sitting as far away as US and Australia getting in touch with their batchmates and friends.
At this juncture, one is a little perplexed as to where to take it from here because it is no more an individual effort. The data uploaded has been searched, compliled and forwarded by all of you with a lot of effort. One has all along, got the support of all of you in following something that few believed in, to begin with. Therefore, I would need your advice on how and what should be the next step. Some of you would say that obviously we should meet each other. I remember one or two OSA meets that I attended and the kind of lukewarm response they got and therefore I am very apprehensive about organising a simple get together. Therefore, can I request you all to give your suggestions and advice on where to take this effort from here. And, if we do decide to get together in chandigarh, when and how should we go about and who all can help in organising this get together. I look forward to your valuable suggestions and advice and hope that this effort would definitely move to the next pedestal and with all the "Elan and Participation" that it deserves.

PS: Some friends have suggested the date of 03 Apr 2010 for  organising the school get-together 02 & 04 Apr being holidays. The reason quite understandably cited is pre-occupation of parents with children exams in Mar. The venue suggested is some restaurant/resort/club and not the school premises.

35 MODEL- SOME NOSTALGIC REMEMBRANCES

35 MODEL- SOME NOSTALGIC REMEMBRANCES

(BY- MS GURMEEN SETHI)
CLASS OF 1978
voicemail62@gmail.com

When I go down memory lane thirty-two years thence,a voice echoes in my mind ..... ,"BETAJI KITHE LAGE PHIRDE HO?". That was Mr. Harbans Singh, our Panjabi cum Class Teacher who graduated each class with us from class 8th to class 10th.He was an epitome of love and affection, a fatherly figure who didn't like the boys talking to the girls. And if he did see any boy doing that then "USKI KHAIR NAHI".He made us write the daily diary which was an ordeal for us......but nevertheless he was our "PETHA" sir.
I joined the school in class 8th in 1976.....the transition from Carmel Convent Sector 9 Chd to GMHS 35 was initially quite painful but gradually the new school grew on me.Today I can say with pride that I learnt a lot in this "model school" which I wouldn't have in a "convent".
In fact, we owe a lot to our teachers'......Mrs. G Surjit Singh (also our principal), Mrs. Surjit Kaur, Mr Grewal, Mr Goyal, Mr Shastri, Mr H C Sharma, Mrs Kapoor, Mrs S Aggarwal, Mrs Jasmine Gill and of course Mr Gurdev Singh who despite flogging the boys mercilessly and pinching and pulling the girls' plaits was quite unpredictably affectionate in his lighter moments.
I specially remember our librarian,Ms Sanyogita Kalia, who had a "mast" gait. She was more like a friend to me and knowing my passion for reading books, she would issue to me, two "Hardy Boys" or "Nancy Drews", instead of the usual quota of "one". To show my gratitude,I made tons of quotation charts for the library in calligraphy, which I'd learnt from Mr H C Sharma.

Today when I behold the well-kept lush lawns of the school, I am reminded of the dry, uneven ground of the yester years where we sat for hours together, studying in groups for our board exams. In fact this idea was also of Harbans Sir , which we followed 50% of the time and the rest of the time was spent telling jokes and singing songs.

"GARMEEN".........Oh, its Sandhu sir....telling me while practising shot put,"EH BAAL(ball)THODA HOR DOOR SUTTAYA KAR"......and I would meekly try to correct him"SIR....ITS GUR---- NOT GAR----"but he was deaf to my pleas and would continue with the same pronunciation even in a more louder pitch.

"HEY CHIBU SIR  AA GAYE!!!! HOMEWORK KIA?? COPY DE DE PLEASE MONA??"......We all used to dread the maths period but were fond of Mr Goyal in our own ways. He was a grim man, who would ,without any warning , burst into a million dollar smile, showing his "beautiful 32" and the class would finally relax.
The Annual Function every year was an event I used to look forward to.....the English play practice, the Hindi play practice, the group song....missing classes ....practising in the porch outside the principal's office for hours....and then returning to the classes with a tired yet triumphant look as if we had returned after fighting a battle..... those were wonderful moments and the teachers' would also excuse our incomplete home-work with an understanding look and treat us with importance. "The Dear Departed ", "Mother's Day" and "Mera Gaon" are the plays we staged in the Tagore theatre....and guess who directed our plays? ......Harry Baweja ,the well known film director of today. Our theatre team included Rajesh Dhiri, Sanjay Mehta, Raminder Kaur, Sangita Aggarwal, (Late)Vandana Malik, Vivek Shauq, Lalit(1977 batch)besides me.

I cannot pen off without mentioning the shoot of two panjabi movies "Sat Sri Akal" and "Giani Ji".The actors Prem Nath,Kamini Kaushal, and Monty (Prem Nath's son) were accompanied by Sardar Malik and his son Anu Malik(music director) to shoot a"prayer scene" and a "band scene" in our school premises .A few of us were taken to Art Gallery, Sector 10 to feature in a song sequence with Prem Nath. I vividly remember Kamini Kaushal cootchie-cooing persistently to a small baby pigeon perched up on her first finger , throughout the shoot. She was also continuously feeding the small birdie with a mashed banana and I'm sure the lil' one must've died of loosies.

There's so much I can share and the memories are endless.....but who care's to read wat I write.....hey....any 1978 batch students who would like to share their experiences???? I'm reminded of the old song..... "BACHPAN KE DIN BHI KYA DIN THE..UDHTE, PHIRTE,GIRTE.....HUM",

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010

A fortnight past this "New Year 2010", I was still contemplating choosing between the two non-options; to give the same monotonous, monologue or not to write at all. The feeling was akin to when a seed planted isn't sprouting as desired. And then I got a call from Ms Gurmeen Sethi, an alumni from 1978 batch. Our conversation not only rejuvinated my sagging spirits with respect to the Blog but also assured me that "...aal izz well...". Despite the fact that we were just Class-4 students when Gurmeen finished her 10th, we were able to connect through the common bond of "35 model". We remembered fondly so many things that it really brought back memories of the past. She has also written a beautiful piece which I shall be uploading seperately. She has also recollected a lot of names from her batch and I am sanguine that the list of 1978 batch will not only get updated by others from the batch but other batches will also come forward to add to the information about their respective batches.
